The flat "Alvar" is located on the top floor of the apartment block "Kivelä". The flat is on the south side of the building. The flat is very bright and sunny, but has no balcony. The flat has been completely renovated, retaining all the old cupboards and doors. In the kitchen, the original kitchen cupboards from the time of construction in 1939 are still present; however, the lower part of the kitchen combination and shower/WC have been completely renewed. The furnishings were mainly designed by Aino and Alvar Aalto for Artek and pictures on the walls document the design process of the Sunila estate.

  • What is the best way to get from Helsinki Airport to Sunila?

Either by hire car directly from the airport, which takes about an hour and a half, or by train to Helsinki (approx. 30-45 minutes) and from there by bus to Karhula bus station (journey time approx. 1 hour and 50 minutes). From there to Sunila either by taxi (approx. 15 €), by bus or on foot (approx. 30 minutes).

  • Which restaurant can you recommend in Sunila?

Sunila is a residential neighbourhood where Korttelikotiyhdistys' lunch restaurant Alvariska (Harjukatu 2) is open from 11 am to 3 pm. You can have a simple, inexpensive lunch there (11am.-12 pm.). There are several restaurants and takeaways in the wider Karhula area, e.g. the Aalto lunch restaurant in Karhula Industrial Park or the Chinese takeaway Li Xiang. Some takeaways also offer home delivery (Kotipizza Karhula, Pizza Metsäkulma).

  • What can you do in Sunila?

Sunila is famous for the architecture of Alvar Aalto, so it's well worth exploring (you'll find literature on this in the flat). We also recommend a tour with Kotka's guides (www.kotkaguides.fi).

It is also interesting to visit the "Kantola" house in Sunila (the villa of the former factory director). You should check the opening hours at www.sunilankantola.fi

Äijänniemi beach is only a few minutes away by car and is worth a visit in both summer and winter.

Sunila has a sports field with outdoor sports equipment and a new running track that anyone can use free of charge.

The nearby Karhula River Park is also worth a visit.

You can go cycling in the surrounding area. The town of Kotka with its many sights (Maretarium, Vellamo Museum, many parks) is also worth a visit. Boat trips to nearby islands are possible from Kotka harbour in summer.
